What Is Exposure Management?

2 min read

Bottom line

Exposure management is a continuous program of finding, prioritizing and reducing the weaknesses that could be used against an organization: vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, missing controls and risky access. It depends on an accurate asset inventory, because an exposure on an asset nobody knows about cannot be prioritized or fixed.

How is exposure management different from vulnerability management?

Vulnerability management works from scanner findings, one CVE at a time. Exposure management widens the view to misconfigurations, missing controls, identity risk and business context, and asks which exposures matter most for this organization. The scanner is one input among several.

Why does exposure management start with asset inventory?

Prioritizing an exposure needs to know the asset: who owns it, what it runs, whether it is internet-facing, which controls apply. Findings from different scanners also have to be matched to the same asset before they can be ranked. That is the correlation problem this ranking scores.

Which tools support exposure management?

Several tools in our ranking position themselves here. Armis calls Armis Centrix a cyber exposure management platform. runZero describes exposure management features on its Platform plan. Axonius adds a prioritization engine on top of its asset data and aggregates findings from existing scanners rather than scanning for vulnerabilities itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is exposure management a product or a program?

A program. Tools support parts of it: inventory, prioritization and remediation workflows.

Do I need a new scanner for exposure management?

Not necessarily. Many programs start by correlating findings from the scanners and tools already deployed.
