CMDB vs Asset Inventory: What Is the Difference?
2 min read
Bottom line
A CMDB is the system of record that IT service processes run on: configuration items, their relationships and the services they support. An asset inventory, in the security sense, is a reconciled view of every asset built from many tools, used to find gaps in coverage and ownership. Most enterprises need both, and the inventory often keeps the CMDB accurate.
What does a CMDB do?
A configuration management database stores configuration items (servers, applications, network gear, services) and the relationships between them. Change, incident and problem processes depend on it: an engineer planning a change needs to know what depends on the server. ServiceNow describes its CMDB as the single, trusted system of record for configuration item data, populated by Discovery and Service Graph Connectors.
What does an asset inventory tool do?
An asset inventory or CAASM tool connects to the systems that each see part of the estate: endpoint management, EDR, identity providers, cloud consoles, vulnerability scanners and the CMDB itself. It works out which records describe the same asset, and shows where the sources disagree: a laptop with no EDR agent, a cloud workload that is not in the CMDB, an account with no owner.
How do they differ?
| CMDB | Asset inventory (CAASM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | System of record for IT service processes | Reconciled view of assets across all tools |
| Primary users | IT operations and service management | Security, and IT asset owners |
| Data model | Configuration items and relationships to services | Assets, identities, controls and findings from each source |
| Typical question | What depends on this server? | Which laptops are missing an EDR agent? |
| Sources | Discovery plus curated integrations | Many tools read in parallel and compared |
| Example tools | ServiceNow CMDB, Device42 | Axonius, JupiterOne, runZero |
Should an asset inventory replace the CMDB?
No. The CMDB is where workflows run, and replacing it means rebuilding those workflows. The common pattern is to feed the CMDB from the inventory: Axonius, for example, documents actions to create, update and remove assets in ServiceNow. See Works alongside: ServiceNow CMDB.

Frequently asked questions
Is a CMDB the same as an asset inventory?
No. A CMDB records configuration items and relationships for IT service processes. An asset inventory reconciles what many tools report to find coverage and ownership gaps. They overlap on the list of assets and differ in purpose.
Do I need a CAASM tool if I have a CMDB?
If security decisions depend on knowing which assets lack a control, usually yes. The CAASM tool checks the CMDB against EDR, identity, cloud and other sources.
