How Write-Back Closes the Loop

By Asset Inventory Ranked research team · 16 September 2026 · 2 min read

Bottom line

Write-back is an inventory tool changing another system based on what it found: opening a ticket, updating a CMDB record or triggering an action on a device. It turns an inventory from a report into a process, as long as the work still runs in the system of record.

What kinds of write-back exist?

  • Tickets: a gap becomes an incident or request in the service management tool.
  • CMDB updates: missing records are created and stale fields corrected.
  • Device and identity actions: adding a device to a group, or triggering an agent install through another tool.
  • Notifications: alerts to a channel or an owner, with no change made.

Which tools in our ranking document it?

Remediation and write-back is one of our seven criteria, weighted at 14%. Axonius leads at 82: it documents enforcement actions as single actions or multi-step sequences with ticket tracking, including creating, updating and removing assets in ServiceNow, while the ticket workflow itself runs in the ITSM tool. Oomnitza (76) automates onboarding, refresh, recovery and license reclamation. Armis (66) pushes enriched data back to the CMDB. JupiterOne (58) documents alerts rather than write-back. Device42 (52), Lansweeper (50) and runZero (48) send data into ITSM tools without enforcement actions of their own.

What should you check before turning it on?

  • Permissions: the service account needs only the rights the action requires.
  • A dry run: run the action in report-only mode first and check the list by hand.
  • Audit trail: the change should be recorded in the target system, not only in the inventory tool.
  • Approval: decide which actions run automatically and which wait for a person.

Write-back works best when the inventory proposes and the system of record decides. That keeps ServiceNow, or whichever CMDB is in place, as the place the work is tracked.
